To determine whether the daily intake of a functional ingredient is safe, it is determined by comparing the intake as a raw material of the ingredient and the amount consumed in other countries.

1. Functional ingredients originated from food material
Convert the intake of your functional ingredient to its raw material. You should consider the yield and the manufacturing process.
Verify whether the converted intake exceeds three times the average daily intake over a 25-year period or the extreme amount (95th percentile).
Additionally, if the raw material is used for medicinal purposes, assess whether the proposed daily intake exceeds the recommended medicinal dose (references will be provided).
2. Functional ingredients using entire raw material as is
Information on the intake of alcohol extracts will also be considered equivalent to data on water extracts.
However, when the raw material has been infused in water (e.g., infused tea), the alcohol extract may differ in content from that obtained through water extraction. Unknown active ingredients that are not traditionally consumed may be extracted and concentrated.
3. Use the reliable sources for the food intake
You can refer the reliable sources for food intake data, such as the National Health and Nutrition Survey and other intake status surveys, when you prove the intake of your functional ingredient. Additionally, gather information on food distribution and sales from Korea and abroad over the past five years. Note that overseas data should be accompanied by relevant country-specific documentation. Calculate the yield of the manufacturing method and report any increases or decreases in intake.
4. Intake of products sold as food or dietary supplements
- If the target group includes children or other specific demographics, intake assessment data for those groups must be provided.
- Compare the intake data with products sold as food and health functional foods in both Korea and abroad for reference.
- If there are historical uses of the raw material, describe them and compare them with current intake levels.
There are several ways to prove that your intake is safe. The examples listed in this post are provided by the Korea MFDS.
